460f6b1a23 Revert "fbcon: Disable accelerated scrolling"
commit 87ab9f6b7417349aa197a6c7098d4fdd4beebb74 upstream.

This reverts commit 39aead8373b3c20bb5965c024dfb51a94e526151.

Revert the first (of 2) commits which disabled scrolling acceleration in
fbcon/fbdev. It introduced a regression for fbdev-supported graphic cards
because of the performance penalty by doing screen scrolling by software
instead of using the existing graphic card 2D hardware acceleration.

Console scrolling acceleration was disabled by dropping code which
checked at runtime the driver hardware capabilities for the
BINFO_HWACCEL_COPYAREA or FBINFO_HWACCEL_FILLRECT flags and if set, it
enabled scrollmode SCROLL_MOVE which uses hardware acceleration to move
screen contents. After dropping those checks scrollmode was hard-wired
to SCROLL_REDRAW instead, which forces all graphic cards to redraw every
character at the new screen position when scrolling.

This change effectively disabled all hardware-based scrolling acceleration for
ALL drivers, because now all kind of 2D hardware acceleration (bitblt,
fillrect) in the drivers isn't used any longer.

The original commit message mentions that only 3 DRM drivers (nouveau, omapdrm
and gma500) used hardware acceleration in the past and thus code for checking
and using scrolling acceleration is obsolete.

This statement is NOT TRUE, because beside the DRM drivers there are around 35
other fbdev drivers which depend on fbdev/fbcon and still provide hardware
acceleration for fbdev/fbcon.

The original commit message also states that syzbot found lots of bugs in fbcon
and thus it's "often the solution to just delete code and remove features".
This is true, and the bugs - which actually affected all users of fbcon,
including DRM - were fixed, or code was dropped like e.g. the support for
software scrollback in vgacon (commit 973c096f6a).

So to further analyze which bugs were found by syzbot, I've looked through all
patches in drivers/video which were tagged with syzbot or syzkaller back to
year 2005. The vast majority fixed the reported issues on a higher level, e.g.
when screen is to be resized, or when font size is to be changed. The few ones
which touched driver code fixed a real driver bug, e.g. by adding a check.

But NONE of those patches touched code of either the SCROLL_MOVE or the
SCROLL_REDRAW case.

That means, there was no real reason why SCROLL_MOVE had to be ripped-out and
just SCROLL_REDRAW had to be used instead. The only reason I can imagine so far
was that SCROLL_MOVE wasn't used by DRM and as such it was assumed that it
could go away. That argument completely missed the fact that SCROLL_MOVE is
still heavily used by fbdev (non-DRM) drivers.

Some people mention that using memcpy() instead of the hardware acceleration is
pretty much the same speed. But that's not true, at least not for older graphic
cards and machines where we see speed decreases by factor 10 and more and thus
this change leads to console responsiveness way worse than before.

That's why the original commit is to be reverted. By reverting we
reintroduce hardware-based scrolling acceleration and fix the
performance regression for fbdev drivers.

There isn't any impact on DRM when reverting those patches.

915f2f8cad drm: Use USB controller's DMA mask when importing dmabufs
commit 659ab7a49cbebe0deffcbe1f9560e82006b21817 upstream.

USB devices cannot perform DMA and hence have no dma_mask set in their
device structure. Therefore importing dmabuf into a USB-based driver
fails, which breaks joining and mirroring of display in X11.

For USB devices, pick the associated USB controller as attachment device.
This allows the DRM import helpers to perform the DMA setup. If the DMA
controller does not support DMA transfers, we're out of luck and cannot
import. Our current USB-based DRM drivers don't use DMA, so the actual
DMA device is not important.

Tested by joining/mirroring displays of udl and radeon under Gnome/X11.

v8:
	* release dmadev if device initialization fails (Noralf)
	* fix commit description (Noralf)
v7:
	* fix use-before-init bug in gm12u320 (Dan)
v6:

397971e1d8 fbcon: Disable accelerated scrolling
commit 39aead8373b3c20bb5965c024dfb51a94e526151 upstream.

So ever since syzbot discovered fbcon, we have solid proof that it's
full of bugs. And often the solution is to just delete code and remove
features, e.g. 50145474f6 ("fbcon: remove soft scrollback code").

Now the problem is that most modern-ish drivers really only treat
fbcon as an dumb kernel console until userspace takes over, and Oops
printer for some emergencies. Looking at drm drivers and the basic
vesa/efi fbdev drivers shows that only 3 drivers support any kind of
acceleration:

- nouveau, seems to be enabled by default
- omapdrm, when a DMM remapper exists using remapper rewriting for
  y/xpanning
- gma500, but that is getting deleted now for the GTT remapper trick,
  and the accelerated copyarea never set the FBINFO_HWACCEL_COPYAREA
  flag, so unused (and could be deleted already I think).

No other driver supportes accelerated fbcon. And fbcon is the only
user of this accel code (it's not exposed as uapi through ioctls),
which means we could garbage collect fairly enormous amounts of code
if we kill this.

Plus because syzbot only runs on virtual hardware, and none of the
drivers for that have acceleration, we'd remove a huge gap in testing.
And there's no other even remotely comprehensive testing aside from
syzbot.

This patch here just disables the acceleration code by always
redrawing when scrolling. The plan is that once this has been merged
for well over a year in released kernels, we can start to go around
and delete a lot of code.

v2:
- Drop a few more unused local variables, somehow I missed the
compiler warnings (Sam)
- Fix typo in comment (Jiri)
- add a todo entry for the cleanup (Thomas)

v3: Remove more unused variables (0day)

cc507c435b gpu: docs: amdgpu.rst: get rid of wrong kernel-doc markups
As reported by kernel-doc:
    ./drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu_xgmi.c:1: warning: no structured comments found
    ./drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu_ras.c:1: warning: no structured comments found

Those files only contain

	/**
	 * DOC:
	 */

markups, but they're included twice there: one to parse
such markup, and another one to parse internal functions.

In the case of amdgpu_xgmi.c, as it has just one such
markup, we can simply include the file once, and let it
parse the entire file without passing arguments to kernel-doc.

This should place everything altogether.

For amdgpu_ras.c, however, we need to remove the kernel-doc
with just internal. This should be re-introduced if this
file ever gets new non-DOC markups.

Pull documentation updates from Mauro Carvalho Chehab:
 "A series of patches addressing warnings produced by make htmldocs.
  This includes:

   - kernel-doc markup fixes

   - ReST fixes

   - Updates at the build system in order to support newer versions of
     the docs build toolchain (Sphinx)

  After this series, the number of html build warnings should reduce
  significantly, and building with Sphinx 3.1 or later should now be
  supported (although it is still recommended to use Sphinx 2.4.4).

  As agreed with Jon, I should be sending you a late pull request by the
  end of the merge window addressing remaining issues with docs build,
  as there are a number of warning fixes that depends on pull requests
  that should be happening along the merge window.

  The end goal is to have a clean htmldocs build on Kernel 5.10.

  PS. It should be noticed that Sphinx 3.0 is not currently supported,
  as it lacks support for C domain namespaces. Such feature, needed in
  order to document uAPI system calls with Sphinx 3.x, was added only on
  Sphinx 3.1"

5e6c2b4f91 drm/vblank: Add vblank works
Add some kind of vblank workers. The interface is similar to regular
delayed works, and is mostly based off kthread_work. It allows for
scheduling delayed works that execute once a particular vblank sequence
has passed. It also allows for accurate flushing of scheduled vblank
works - in that flushing waits for both the vblank sequence and job
execution to complete, or for the work to get cancelled - whichever
comes first.

Whatever hardware programming we do in the work must be fast (must at
least complete during the vblank or scanout period, sometimes during the
first few scanlines of the vblank). As such we use a high-priority
per-CRTC thread to accomplish this.

Changes since v7:
* Stuff drm_vblank_internal.h and drm_vblank_work_internal.h contents
  into drm_internal.h
* Get rid of unnecessary spinlock in drm_crtc_vblank_on()
* Remove !vblank->worker check
* Grab vbl_lock in drm_vblank_work_schedule()
* Mention self-rearming work items in drm_vblank_work_schedule() kdocs
* Return 1 from drm_vblank_work_schedule() if the work was scheduled
  successfully, 0 or error code otherwise
* Use drm_dbg_core() instead of DRM_DEV_ERROR() in
  drm_vblank_work_schedule()
* Remove vblank->worker checks in drm_vblank_destroy_worker() and
  drm_vblank_flush_worker()
Changes since v6:
* Get rid of ->pending and seqcounts, and implement flushing through
  simpler means - danvet
* Get rid of work_lock, just use drm_device->event_lock
* Move drm_vblank_work item cleanup into drm_crtc_vblank_off() so that
  we ensure that all vblank work has finished before disabling vblanks
* Add checks into drm_crtc_vblank_reset() so we yell if it gets called
  while there's vblank workers active
* Grab event_lock in both drm_crtc_vblank_on()/drm_crtc_vblank_off(),
  the main reason for this is so that other threads calling
  drm_vblank_work_schedule() are blocked from attempting to schedule
  while we're in the middle of enabling/disabling vblanks.
* Move drm_handle_vblank_works() call below drm_handle_vblank_events()
* Simplify drm_vblank_work_cancel_sync()
* Fix drm_vblank_work_cancel_sync() documentation
* Move wake_up_all() calls out of spinlock where we can. The only one I
  left was the call to wake_up_all() in drm_vblank_handle_works() as
  this seemed like it made more sense just living in that function
  (which is all technically under lock)
* Move drm_vblank_work related functions into their own source files
* Add drm_vblank_internal.h so we can export some functions we don't
  want drivers using, but that we do need to use in drm_vblank_work.c
* Add a bunch of documentation
Changes since v4:
* Get rid of kthread interfaces we tried adding and move all of the
  locking into drm_vblank.c. For implementing drm_vblank_work_flush(),
  we now use a wait_queue and sequence counters in order to
  differentiate between multiple work item executions.
* Get rid of drm_vblank_work_cancel() - this would have been pretty
  difficult to actually reimplement and it occurred to me that neither
  nouveau or i915 are even planning to use this function. Since there's
  also no async cancel function for most of the work interfaces in the
  kernel, it seems a bit unnecessary anyway.
* Get rid of to_drm_vblank_work() since we now are also able to just
  pass the struct drm_vblank_work to work item callbacks anyway
Changes since v3:
* Use our own spinlocks, don't integrate so tightly with kthread_works
Changes since v2:
* Use kthread_workers instead of reinventing the wheel.

0b638559aa drm/doc: Some polish for shmem helpers

  Also, that's where the all the other backing storage stuff resides.
  It's just the framebuffer helpers that should be in the kms helper

- Try to clarify which functiosn are for implementing

be6ee10234 drm: remove _unlocked suffix in drm_gem_object_put_unlocked
Spelling out _unlocked for each and every driver is a annoying.
Especially if we consider how many drivers, do not know (or need to)
about the horror stories involving struct_mutex.

Just drop the suffix. It makes the API cleaner.

Done via the following script:

__from=drm_gem_object_put_unlocked
__to=drm_gem_object_put
for __file in $(git grep --name-only $__from); do
  sed -i  "s/$__from/$__to/g" $__file;
done

Pay special attention to the compat #define

bd607166af drm/amdgpu: Enable reading FRU chip via I2C v3
Allow for reading of information like manufacturer, product number
and serial number from the FRU chip. Report the serial number as
the new sysfs file serial_number. Note that this only works on
server cards, as consumer cards do not feature the FRU chip, which
contains this information.

v2: Add documentation to amdgpu.rst, add helper functions,
    rename functions for consistency, fix bad starting offset
v3: Remove testing definitions

bcf6293d7a drm/core: Calculate bpp in afbc helper
Some drivers (komeda, malidp) don't set anything in cpp. If that is the
case the right value can be inferred from the format. Then the "bpp" member
can be eliminated from struct drm_afbc_framebuffer.

9e1ed9fb1e drm: Add docs for managed resources
All collected together to provide a consistent story in one patch,
instead of the somewhat bumpy refactor-evolution leading to this.

Also some thoughts on what the next steps could be:

- Create a macro called devm_drm_dev_alloc() which essentially wraps
  the kzalloc(); devm_drm_dev_init(); drmm_add_final_kfree() combo.
  Needs to be a macro since we'll have to do some typeof trickery and
  casting to make this fully generic for all drivers that embed struct
  drm_device into their own thing.

- A lot of the simple drivers now have essentially just
  drm_dev_unplug(); drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(); as their
  $bus_driver->remove hook. We could create a devm_mode_config_reset
  which sets drm_atomic_helper_shutdown as it's cleanup action, and a
  devm_drm_dev_register with drm_dev_unplug as it's cleanup action,
  and simple drivers wouldn't have a need for a ->remove function at
  all, and we could delete them.

- For more complicated drivers we need drmm_ versions of a _lot_ more
  things. All the userspace visible objects (crtc, plane, encoder,
  crtc), anything else hanging of those (maybe a drmm_get_edid, at
  least for panels and other built-in stuff).

Also some more thoughts on why we're not reusing devm_ with maybe a
fake struct device embedded into the drm_device (we can't use the
kdev, since that's in each drm_minor).

- Code review gets extremely tricky, since every time you see a devm_
  you need to carefully check whether the fake device (with the
  drm_device lifetim) or the real device (with the lifetim of the
  underlying physical device and driver binding) are used. That's not
  going to help at all, and we have enormous amounts of drivers who
  use devm_ where they really shouldn't. Having different types makes
  sure the compiler type checks this for us and ensures correctness.

- The set of functions are very much non-overlapping. E.g.
  devm_ioremap makes total sense, drmm_ioremap has the wrong lifetime,
  since hw resources need to be cleaned out at driver unbind and wont
  outlive that like a drm_device. Similar, but other way round for
  drmm_connector_init (which is the only correct version, devm_ for
  drm_connector is just buggy). Simply not having the wrong version
  again prevents bugs.

Finally I guess this opens a huge todo for all the drivers. I'm
semi-tempted to do a tree-wide s/devm_kzalloc/drmm_kzalloc/ since most
likely that'll fix an enormous amount of bugs and most likely not
cause any issues at all (aside from maybe holding onto memory slightly
too long).

v2:
- Doc improvements from Laurent.
- Also add kerneldoc for the new drmm_add_action_or_reset.

v3:
- Remove kerneldoc for drmm_remove_action.
